Hoffman Estates man charged with stabbing two in Arlington Heights apartment melee

Two people suffered stab wounds and a Hoffman Estates man is charged with attempted murder following an attack inside an Arlington Heights apartment Thursday morning.

Police were called to the seven-story apartment complex on the 200 block of Dunton Avenue at about 7 a.m. after a relative of one of the victims interrupted the attack.

Police cleared the building and found a blood trail that led outside the complex. Using video surveillance footage from the area, police were able to track the suspect to a location near Northwest Highway and Route 53, where he was arrested. A knife that police believe was used in the attack was in the man’s pocket.

Damian R. Engelmann, 18, of Hoffman Estates, was charged in the attack. He is being detained pretrial at the Cook County jail. His next court date is May 29.

Both of the victims were transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights for treatment.

Police said both victims were male. One suffered stab wounds to his ear and neck while the second victim suffered stab wounds to his head, neck and hands. Their conditions are unknown.

Police said the victims knew Engelmann prior to the attack.
