Suspicious device leads to evacuations, closed streets in downtown St. Charles

The FBI is investigating the discovery of a suspicious device Saturday night in a flower planter in downtown St. Charles.

According to St. Charles police, officers responded to a report of the device at about 10:37 p.m. in the 200 block West Main Street. Officers immediately secured the scene and evacuated nearby residences and businesses as a precaution, police said.

Main Street also was closed to traffic between 3rd Street and Riverside Avenue, and 2nd Street was closed between Indiana Street and Cedar Street, during the investigation. The area has since reopened.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad and the FBI responded to assist.

Police on Sunday did not provide a description of the device or indicate whether it was dangerous, but said there is no current threat to the public. St. Charles police are investigating with the FBI, officials said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the St. Charles Police Department at (630) 377-4435.
