Kane County expands access to life-saving Naloxone with community dispensing boxes

The Kane County Health Department has partnered with community organizations across the county over the past year to install publicly accessible naloxone dispensing boxes, making the life-saving medication easier for residents to obtain quickly and discreetly.

Naloxone is a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. In Illinois, it is available without a prescription, and individuals do not need to show identification to receive it. Making naloxone widely available is a key strategy in preventing overdose deaths and ensuring that community members can respond immediately in an emergency.

Naloxone is extremely safe and will not harm someone who has not taken opioids. Health experts often note that it is as safe as water, which means it should be used if someone appears to be experiencing an overdose even if you are not certain opioids are involved.

Over the past year, the health department worked with healthcare providers, community organizations, libraries, and government agencies to install naloxone dispensing boxes at the following locations:

In addition to these naloxone dispensing boxes, more than 100 additional locations across Kane County provide free naloxone to the public.
