Reach Rescue to break ground on new facility, expanding impact on animals in Lake County

Reach Rescue will host a historic groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, May 2, to mark the beginning of construction on its new, state-of-the-art animal rescue facility, an important step forward in its mission to save lives and support animals in need in Lake County and beyond.

Founded in 2011 in Mundelein, Reach Rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based animal rescue organization that has saved more than 6,000 animals over the past 14 years. The organization works with local animal control facilities, owner surrenders, and overcrowded shelters across the country to provide safe, loving outcomes for animals in need. While primarily focused on dogs, Reach Rescue also assists in rehoming cats, birds and other small animals.

The planned 11,672-square-foot facility will dramatically expand the organization’s ability to serve both animals and the community. Designed with 25 rooms and ample parking, the space will include dedicated areas for adoptions, grooming and training, as well as specialized medical treatment rooms. Plans also feature an outdoor exercise and agility park and a Community Pet Food Pantry to support families facing financial hardship and underresourced shelters.

“This groundbreaking is more than just a new building, it’s a commitment to doing more than we can right now,” said Barb Giambalvo-Myers, one of Reach Rescue’s Board of Directors. “Every day, we hear from families in crisis and see the growing need in our community and beyond. This facility will allow us to expand our reach, provide critical resources and ultimately save more lives.”

Animal welfare challenges remain urgent nationwide, with millions of animals entering shelters each year and many at risk due to overcrowding and limited resources. Economic pressures have further strained pet owners and animal services, increasing the demand for organizations like Reach Rescue.

The new facility will also support expanded outreach and education efforts aimed at preventing the need for rescue by helping pet owners access resources and make informed decisions. Reach Rescue is calling on the community for support as it prepares to bring this vision to life.

Donations, sponsorships, and in-kind contributions of materials and services are essential to making the project a reality.

“With the community’s support, we can create a space that not only rescues animals but strengthens the bond between pets and the people who love them,” Giambalvo-Myers said.

The groundbreaking ceremony on May 2 is open to supporters, partners, and community members who wish to be part of this milestone moment.
