New DMV with streamlined services debuts in Des Plaines

Des Plaines-area residents can check out an all-new DMV this week at 1533 Lee St.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office closed its previous Des Plaines facility at 1470 Lee St. on Friday. Its replacement opens at 10 a.m. Monday.

The updated, appointment-only DMV features cross-trained employees so visitors don’t have to go to separate counters for vehicle and driver’s services.

“The opening of this redesigned Des Plaines facility is about rethinking how we deliver service to better meet people where they are,” Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said in a statement.

“With a more efficient layout and our one-stop-shop approach, we’re cutting down complexity, increasing access to appointments and making every visit quicker and easier for customers.”

Drivers can apply for and renew licenses, submit REAL ID applications, take road tests, and obtain sticker renewals, title work and more.

The previous Des Plaines DMV, which was more than 10 years old, ranked sixth-busiest in the suburbs, with nearly 100,000 driver’s services transactions in 2025.

Hours at the new office are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Customers can schedule appointments online at ilsos.gov or by calling (800) 252-8980.
