Naperville council approves five-story apartment building on city's south end
Naperville City Council members have approved plans for a five-story apartment building off Route 59 on the city’s south end.
The development, dubbed “The Atlas,” will include 236 units featuring 77 studios, 133 one-bedroom and 26 two-bedroom residences. The building is within walking distance to major retailers and recreational opportunities around Route 59 and 75th Street.
“Naperville is a unique community, and The Atlas will reflect this by promoting social connectivity, shared spaces and thoughtful design,” said Alexander Shalavi, partner at Bridge Capital Partners. “Its location will offer residents convenient access to the recreation, retail and hospitality options that make Naperville a great place to live.”
Three years ago, the city council approved plans for a senior convalescent home on the 6.2-acre parcel, but the project never came to fruition. Council members on April 7 revoked zoning for those plans and approved plans for The Atlas.
The apartment building will be built on nearly 4.6 acres, with the remaining roughly 1.7 acres, which front Route 59, open for future commercial development.
According to documents submitted to the city, the developer, through its related companies, owns and manages more than 1,500 apartments in Naperville, including those in Fifth Avenue Station north of the city’s downtown.
Prior to a public hearing on the proposal, Shalavi said he had the “working professional” in mind for “The Atlas.” He said the latest project reminds him of the Fifth Avenue Station because it also offers walkability to nearby retailers.
The Atlas will have an outdoor pool and patio area, a dog run, a large fitness center and a co-working lounge. A terrace and a club room with a pool table, shuffleboard and a lounge area to watch TV will be on the top floor.
“We look forward to offering residents a distinctive option tailored to this generation’s preferences,” he said.
