Illinois Extension celebrates National Volunteer Week

Since its origins in 1974, National Volunteer Week serves as a time to recognize and appreciate volunteers for their service to the communities and causes they hold dear.

The Illinois Extension relies on volunteers to support its mission, strengthen partnerships, and inspire positive change. During this year’s National Volunteer Week, celebrated from April 19-25, they are highlighting a few of the key volunteer groups that create successful programs and impactful experiences within the communities that they serve.

The strength of our 4-H program is built on the dedication, generosity, and leadership of volunteers. Each year, caring adults across the community step forward to guide, teach, and support young people as they explore interests and develop lifelong skills. Whether serving as club leaders, project superintendents, committee members, or workshop volunteers, these individuals play an essential role in creating the positive, enriching environment that defines 4-H.

Volunteers are at the heart of the 4-H experience. They bring knowledge, patience, and a genuine commitment to helping youth succeed. Through hands-on learning, meaningful mentorship, and consistent encouragement, volunteers help young people set goals, overcome challenges, and discover new strengths. From planning educational activities to modeling community service and fostering teamwork, their guidance builds confidence, responsibility, and leadership skills that last well beyond meetings and events.

The Illinois Extension is deeply grateful for the time and talent volunteers invest in the 4-H program. Their commitment strengthens partnerships, expands opportunities for youth, and ensures that our communities continue to benefit from a strong, vibrant 4-H tradition. The success of the program and the growth we see in young people is a direct reflection of their dedication. To all our 4-H volunteers, thank you. Your service makes a lasting difference in the lives of youth and in the future of our communities. Your leadership, mentorship, and belief in young people help make the best better every day.

Master Gardeners volunteers showcase their love for and knowledge of plants and their desire to share that with others. These volunteers are trained and knowledgeable community stewards who provide horticultural care and education in growing food and flowers, supporting pollinators, and sustaining home and community gardens. Last year, Master Gardener volunteers provided education and outreach, answered local questions, beautified community spaces, and hosted public events to learn and grow. They are thankful for Master Gardener programs and volunteers for their passion in serving their communities and sharing their knowledge with others.

Many community members also serve our organization by being on advisory boards, 4-H foundations, and our unit-wide extension council. These volunteers serve as advocates for their communities and work hand in hand with staff to plan events, promote programs, raise funds, or tell the Extension story. Thanks to those who have served in one or many of these capacities through the years.
