Scouting the DuPage County and Fox Valley girls track and field season

Spring has arrived, which means the girls track and field season is emerging from hibernation and headed outdoors. DuPage County and Fox Valley schools feature a plethora of talent that is ready to leave the indoor tracks behind and punch their ticket to Charleston this May:

DuPage County

Addison Trail

A young, hungry, and competitive team will be led by the trio of Leyla Mahutovich (sprints/hurdles), Kaitlyn Sosin (sprints/hurdles), and Mya Gomez (hurdles/relays). Tatyana Santiago and Angela Carillo are young sprinters who will rotate in and out of the varsity lineup. The middle distance group and hurdlers are top returners who work hard and have great work ethic. All but one senior was named to the academic all-conference team last season, something that coach Anthony Beltrano hopes to replicate once again this year.

Last year’s state qualifiers Keira Jenke (middle distance), Gabi Brown (sprints/hurdles), and Emma Briggs (throws) will lead the way for Benet Academy as the Redwings look to send each of them downstate once again this spring. Jenke ran the fastest 800m in the state and won the Illinois Top Times championship during the indoor season. Brown finished third at Illinois Top Times in the 400m and set a new school record. Briggs was top 10 in the state indoor season this winter for shot put. Newcomers Sara Luo, Sarah Read, and Abby Morrissey are expected to be strong contributors as well.

The team strength will be its balance. The Bison expect to be competitive within conference in relays and distance events.
