Scouting the DuPage County and Fox Valley boys track and field season
The weather is warming up and that means it is just about time for the boys track and field season to move from indoors to outdoors. Local schools feature a lot of talent throughout DuPage County and Fox Valley. Here are some of teams to watch this spring:
DuPage County
Addison Trail
Nathan Gunderson and Carter McCoo are set to form a dynamic duo that will lead the Blazers in the 1,600 (Gunderson) and the 100, 200 and long jump (McCoo). McCoo took third place in the 60m at the Chicago Circuit this winter, while Gunderson took seventh in the 1,600. Joining them will be newcomers Nico Cerrillo (sprints), Levar Goins (sprints), Jonathan Ramirez (sprints), Jesus Ibarra (400), and freshman Breydan Massett (800). Coach Paul Parpet anticipates a competitive sprint team.
Benet
Distance, pole vault and hurdles will be key events for Benet this spring, as a talented group of upperclassmen are set to lead the way for a team that is hoping to compete for a conference title in their last season as part of the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Will Niziolek (hurdles), Bob Johnson (distance), Lucas Catapia (sprints), Will Schaeffer (distance), and Declan Diamond (pole vault) are strong returners that coach Brian Quick will lean on throughout that conference title chase. Niziolek qualified for indoor nationals this winter. Diamond is hoping to claim the school record in pole vault.

Jayden Daniel and Devin White will throw shot put. Owen Ashmore, Nolan Borgman, Bode Haber, Ollie Wintermute, Jamarcus Kelly, Jayden McKay, and Finn Benson will do the jumping.

Experienced, confident, and determined. That is how Red Devils coach Jim Westphal would describe his group as they head into the spring season. Sprints and middle distance events will be a strength for this squad, with Dominic Tresslar (sprints/relays), Michael Gamboa (1,600/3,200), and Henry Miller (1,600/3,200) leading the way. Ethan Tamas is a standout thrower, while Kaden Webb, Braden Tingler, Sammy Mourad, George Zilliox, Logan Tarasi, Johnny Krueger, and Noah Mokhtarian will add depth across a variety of events, including sprints, middle distance, and hurdles. Mason Wagner (sprints) and Frank Karpiesiuk (200/long jump) will be key newcomers for the Knights after an off-season of work that was put in. IC Catholic Prep was able to send athletes to state last year and hope to do so once again this spring with shot/discus leading the way.
Lake Park
The Lancers have a proud history of top flight track and field programs, but coach Joey Pacione thinks that the best could be yet to come. “This will be one of our strongest teams in history,” said Pacione, who believes their strength in field events will continue this. “We expect to have all-state caliber athletes in every field event. Our 4x400m relay will be strong as well,” he added. Rodrigo Gonzalez and Joey Michelini will lead the throws. Niko Menos (high jump), Zino DiFranco (pole vault), Anthony Orestano (pole vault), and Xavier Jones (triple jump) are all returning state qualifiers. Omar Kuta transferred in from Schaumburg and will contribute in the 200 and 400.
Lisle
Lisle has had a tremendous off-season and hopes to send multiple athletes to state. The 4x100 and 4x800 relays are expected to be their standout events, with Blake DeBuhr, Nathan Garcia, Simon Klein, and Ibraheem Harb contributing to those runs. Zach Webb is a standout on the throwing side. DeBuhr, Garcia, Harb, and Klein were all-conference selections last year. Newcomer Thomas Furmanski joined the squad this off-season and coach Cory Dillard expects him to turn heads in the sprints and relays.
Metea Valley
The top returning Mustangs will be Henry Faber (sprints/relays), Dylan Bennett-Garza (sprints/relays), Zoelen Terry (long jump/relays), Akinyemi Igbalajobi (hurdles/relays), and George Murphy (high jump). Faber qualified for state in the 400 and earned both the DVC indoor conference championship, as well as DuPage County championship. Bennett-Garza hit a 4:30.74 PR in the 1,600m and is the third-ranked returning athlete in the DVC. Terry was the 3A long jump state champion last year with Naperville Central. Igbalajobi was a state qualifier in the 300 hurdles and Murphy placed second in the high jump at last season's DVC outdoor meet.
Montini
The Broncos return for 2026 with a number of good pieces to a standout team, with Nico Pesola (distance/relays), Sean Buckely (distance/relays), Nico Castaldo (sprints), Adriel Garcia (sprints/relays), Graham Riser (sprints/relays), and Joey Gabreleski (sprints) among top expected contributors. Pesola ran a 9:48 in the 3,200 this winter and qualified for 2A state in the 4x800 last year. Matthew Ferris (distance), Charles Flowers (sprints), Josh Rouzan (sprints/jumps), and Damacio Oretegon (sprints) lead the newcomers.
Naperville Central
The 2025 indoor/outdoor DVC champions return a very strong group after qualifying for state in several events last season. Chad Earl (sprints), Ben Blank (throws/jumps), Tim Pressig (throws), Manny Najera (distance), Derek Williamson (distance), Lukas Probst (distance), Eron Kennedy (sprints/hurdles), and Kyle Clark (sprints) are among the top veterans on the team. While they lose state champion long jumper Zoelen Terry (Metea Valley), they add Vince Barcelona (jumps/sprints), and the trio of James Vent, Connor Marvin, and Kai DiCelemente to their sprint program. Expect a complete team this year that should score in the majority of events at every meet.
Naperville North
Simon Reckamp, Jackson Truty, and Charlie Minott will lead a strong distance program. The trio qualified for state in cross country last fall. Connor Schultze has thrown over state qualifying in the shot put in the early parts of our season. Andrew Hebron brings quality in the 200 and 400 with early marks. Coach Chris Arthurs remarked their five captains come from highly accomplished multi-sport backgrounds. They are working hard to bring the success they had in their other sports to the track this season for a squad that finished top four in their 3A sectional last year. Look out for newcomers Jude Knechtel (sprints), Jayke Collins (sprints), Mason Hill (hurdles), and Shrey Meyer (distance).
Neuqua Valley
This will be a well rounded team with strength in the sprints, distance, and field events. Many of Neuqua Valley’s top athletes have already been to the state meet last year. The group will be led by Daniel Robinson (sprints/jumps), Edward Mason (sprints), Grayson Meek (distance/middle distance), Jesse Gudauskas (distance), Will Michalczyk (throws), Will Kalish (sprints/jumps), and Rogan Nelson (pole vault). Scholma qualified for state in the long jump last year. Brady joined him downstate, medaling in both the 300 intermediate hurdles and the long jump. Luke Cudney is a freshman who is showing promise in multiple events for a well balanced team. Their sprint, hurdle, jump events should be their strongest.
Waubonsie Valley
Colin Ford, Jackson Klaft, Jordan Rich, and Bryan Mann will run sprint races for the Warriors. Achyuth Randeep and Noah Williams ran the 1,600 this winter, while Ryan Wu ran the 3,200. Hurdles were handled by Cole Woolard, Pranav Damera, and Nehemiah Jones. Ayden Ochoa, Mason Fiscal, and Stilian Pavlov throw shot put. Ishmaiah Elliott, Woolard, and Avanish Bawadhankaar compete in high jump. Elijah Garrett will long jump, with Matthew Crane as the leading pole vaulter.
West Chicago
Sprint relays and field events figure to be the strongest for West Chicago and coach Dan Greco this spring. The sprint relays return most runners from last season, so they are experienced in those events. Nicholas Roskilly (high jump/4x200/4x400) has picked up right where he left off last season in high jump, while Isaiah Sylvester has made big strides in shot put from a year ago. Greco feels this group is fired up. “If I were to describe the team this season in one word, I would use ‘determined’,” said Greco. “Our 4x2 team missed the state qualifying time last year by less than one second, and with three out of the four returning, they are focused on making it to state this year.” Top newcomers include Micha Sylvester (long jump/400m) and Bobby Elizondo (4x200m relay/100m/200m).
Westmont
Luke Jimenca, Yannis Tutuianu, Andre Johnson, and Nathan Smigla will run springs for Westmont. Frank Fafrowicz and Frankie Salerno will work with Eric Alvarez, Colin McDaniels, and Desmond Stanlius to run distance. Angel Gonzalez and Andrew Hynes will throw shot put. Johnson, and Aidan Laygo will compete in jumps, with Alvarez and McDaniels pole vaulting.
Wheaton Academy
Wheaton Academy is hoping to send its 4x800 team down to the state final for the third straight year. Luke Osterholm (800/1,600) is also looking to qualify for the third straight year. Griff Schlenbecker is going to be in the running for the state title in the high jump. During his club season, he cleared 6-feet-10. Michael Boney is another standout returner in the 400 and the 800. Coach Chris Felinski expects freshman Bradley Hughes, Andrew Nestrick, and Aksel Escareno to make an impact on the sprinting side on day one. Aksel Escareno could be a scorer in the distance races — he ran 4:48 as an eighth grader.

Willowbrook has a young group, as a large freshman class joins the ranks this season. Coach Terrence Miller has been enjoying the process. “We are learning a ton of new events and coaches are having a blast coaching the basics as we are back in that building phase,” said Miller. That being said, he expects to remain strong in the field events this year. OJ Powell returns in the high jump, triple jump, and long jump. Hayden Roscoe will return for sprints, hurdles, and relays.
