Excessive cost doomed police referendum
My wife and I have been residents of Geneva for 35 years. We agree that the Geneva police do a fantastic job and that they need a new station. I believe that the reason that the referendum failed was the excessive price tag of $59.4 million.
Neighboring St. Charles built a new police station in 2019 for a cost of $24.6 million. Bartlett also completed its new police station in 2019 for $20 million. Admittedly prices have gone up considerably in the past seven years, but not 141%.
Geneva already owns the land, so that is not included in the $59.4 million cost. They need to go back to the drawing board and come up with a more reasonable proposal that would have a much better chance of passing.
