Track and field: Nine records fall at MSL indoor meet
On a day or record setting heat, records fell indoors Saturday at the annual MSL Nagel-Saylor Indoor Invite at North Central College in Naperville.
There were 9 individual meet records set, with Conant’s Daisha Brunson accounting for two of them.
Meanwhile, Prospect’s boys and girls teams both claimed their respective team titles, with the girls winning their fifth consecutive meet title.
Prospect won with a score of 160. Barrington was second with 111 points followed by Hersey’s 81 and Elk Grove’s 52.
“We have had a good run here,” Prospect girls coach Peter Wintermute said. “We had lots of kids stepping up everywhere and a bunch of young kids surprise us. It is really fun when that happens.”
The Knights were led by their 4x200 relay team of Nikki Niebrugge, Sam Skowronski, Elyse Freeman and Olivia Farina who set a meet record with a time of 1:44.17.
The Knights also won the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:33.18 while their 4x400 relay team won with a 4:05.59. Dajana Skolimowska was an individual winner for Prospect in the 400 with a time of 59.88.
Brunson, who is a senior and will run at Michigan next season, won the 55 meter dash in a meet record 7.09. She then followed up with a meet-record 24.48 to win the 200.
“I have been running on bunked tracks, so coming back to a fly track was a bit of an adjustment,” Brunson said. “But I feel that I had a new race plan and it worked out. So I was looking to get out hard and then on the last curve push all I have got.”
Hersey’s Emilia Rogowski had a big day. First she set a meet record in the long jump with a final jump of 5.71m. She then followed with a winning effort in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.38.
“I felt a little sick today, so I was a little worried,” Rogowski said. “I did my first two jumps and got my season best. And then on my last jump, I listened to my coach who told me I had nothing to lose. So that is exactly what I did.”
Mia Sirois set off a string of winning times for Barrington. The junior won the 1,600 in a meet record time of 4:53.99.
“I haven’t really tapped into much speed work,” said Sirois, who won the event by over 10 seconds. “So I think a lot of it was just getting a good effort today. And it never hurts to get some extra team points.”
The Fillies’ Victoria Tarara followed with a win the 3,200 in 10:53.85 while teammates Madison Miles won the 800 in 2:18.69 and Yane Jansen Van Rensburg won the pole vault with 3.56.
Fremd’s Tasheva won the shot with a throw of 10.95. Palatine’s Megan Oleksak won the high jump in 1.57m and Wheeling’s Sierra Kuhlman won the triple jump in 10.64.
Prospect’s boys, who were second last year at this meet, got solid performances all around and won the meet this year with a score of 129.5. Hersey was second with 96 points followed by Fremd’s 67, Barrington’s 53 and Schaumburg’s 51.5.
“It was really nice to bounce up,” Prospect boys coach Jeff Collier said. “We had 10 different evens where we were able to get double scores.”
The Knights’ Luke Robinson won the 3,200 in 9:23.37. Shea Lewis had a personal-best 18.09 to win the shot while teammate Christopher Behles was second with a 16.55, showing off that Prospect double score.
“My practice this week leading up to the meet was really good,” said Lewis, who eclipsed his best throw by over two meters.
“I really just focused on looking at the little things. And it all paid off in the end.”
Barrington’s Adam Lyon and Hayden Dahlin each had a record-setting day.
Lyon set a meet record with his 49.83 mark in the 400 while Dahlin set a record with a pole vault of 4.70.
“I really wanted to break 50,” Lyon said. “This was the perfect time to do that.”
Dahlin had already won the meet title before he set his record on his next-to-last jump.
“I have been working pretty hard,” Dahlin said. “My last couple of meets I haven’t been very happy with. It really came together today. I just focused on an explosive plant and my speed as well.”
Rolling Meadows’ Arman Lupuzanovic said he had not been jumping well of late. The Mustangs senior took off Saturday and set a meet record with 7.39m in the long jump.
“You can say that I exceeded my own expectations today,” Lupuzanovic said. “I was just trying today to get back to what I have been doing before. It was a great day. “
Schaumburg’s 4x200 team of Xavier Tudela, Anthony Say, Blessing Gbenyo and Izzy Pedroza set a meet record of 1:31.45. Tudela also won the 55 in 6.54.
Hersey won the 4x800 relay in 8:15.85 while their 4x400 won in 3:30.53. The Huskies’ Mateus Salomao won the 800 in 1:57.46 while Gabriel Gronski won the 1,600 in 4:19.28.
Hoffman Estates’ JMari Jackson won the 55 hurdles with a personal best 7.65. He also won the triple jump with a jump of 13.50m. Buffalo Grove’s Anton Zweig won the 200 in 22.59.
