Wegman gets Democratic nomination for Kane County treasurer

Kane County Auditor Penny Wegman received the Democratic Party nomination for Kane County treasurer on Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

The Elgin Democrat ran against Candida “Connie” Cain of Gilberts and Scott Johansen of Campton Hills in the primary.

Wegman had 26,974votes, Cain had 6,660, and Johansen had 7,211 when all precincts were reported.

Wegman has been the county auditor since 2020. She is a real estate agent.

The Democratic nominee will take on incumbent Republican Chris Lauzen in November. Lauzen has said he is seeking his last term.

Before becoming treasurer, Lauzen served eight years as chairman of the Kane County Board. He served as a state senator for 20 years before that.

Cain is a former Republican who worked for more than a year in the treasurer’s office under Lauzen until he fired her. Cain is a certified public accountant.

During the campaign, Johansen, who is retired, cited his experience creating and running a business for three decades.
