Palatine police: Man found dead in car with gunshot wound

A 20-year-old man died of an apparent gunshot wound after police found him in a car reportedly involved in several crashes Monday night, Palatine police said.

Police identified the man as Kevin K. Koonce of Streamwood. The Cook County medical examiner’s office reported his was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.

Palatine police were called to the 1200 block of East Prairie Brook Drive at 9:39 p.m. for a report of a vehicle that had struck multiple parked vehicles and a dumpster.

Officers found Koonce in the driver’s seat of a black Audi four-door vehicle.

Palatine firefighters were called to the location and took the man to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Palatine police are investigating, along with the Major Case Assistance Team.

North Rand Road was closed between Route 53 and Dundee Road for several hours, but reopened just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
