Gail Borden Library to unveil final phase of ‘KidSpace Reimagined’ March 27

Gail Borden Public Library District officials will unveil the fully reimagined KidSpace at a grand opening celebration from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27, at the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin.

The “KidSpace Reimagined” project has been a multiphase major renovation project implemented to modernize the approximately 19,200-square-foot children's area into a world-class hub for learning and discovery.

The upcoming event marks the final reveal of the complete space, designed to turn every visit into an extraordinary journey of learning and play within a more modern, accessible and dynamic environment.

Following the successful May 2025 opening of the early learning area, the elementary area transformation began in November 2025.

Grand opening festivities are slated to include an exciting reveal, offering attendees the first opportunity to experience the fully renovated space.

Additionally, an array of high-energy activities including a roving magician, face painting, giveaways, crafts, a scavenger hunt, interactive wall and more will offer visitors engaging, hands-on ways to explore the new area.

“The completion of the KidSpace Reimagined project marks a promise kept to our community,” said Carole Medal, the library district CEO. “We’ve built a world-class environment where literacy and play are the foundation for lifelong learning, and we are eager to see this new space spark the imaginations of the next generation of creators, explorers and future leaders.”

“This space is where the kids of our community start their lifelong library experience,” said Jean Bednar, library board president. “We believe this is an investment in the curiosity of every child that is able to spend time here. We look forward to a big turnout for the Grand Opening of our completed KidSpace, and expect an increase in library visits from people of all ages because, let's face it — libraries are fun for everyone.”

The project’s success was fueled heavily by incredible community support. New renovations will feature a centralized “Izaak Walton League Park,” reflecting the partner’s major sponsorship and an expansion of the nature theme revealed in phase 1.

It will also include countless new opportunities for families to play, learn and grow together in a dynamic setting.
