Democratic candidates discuss issues in primary for U.S. Senate

The candidates for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senator from Illinois met recently with representatives of the Daily Herald Editorial Board and a news reporter to discuss issues in the campaign.

The winning candidate will face one of six Republicans seeking that party’s nomination for a spot on the November ballot. The winner in November will replace Sen. Richard Durbin, the longtime Democrat who announced his retirement at the end of the current term.

Because of the large number of primary candidates, the individuals were divided into three separate groups. These included Steve Botsford Jr., Sean Brown, Jonathan Dean, Robin Kelly, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Bryan Maxwell, Kevin Ryan and Christopher Swann.

Two candidates — Awisi A. Bustos and Juliana Stratton — were not available for Zoom interviews and were interviewed separately.

In each interview the candidates discussed issues including U.S. foreign policy, immigration, economic policy and more.
