Song lyrics promote equality, compassion
Even as a youngster, I believed that song lyrics could play a significant role in contributing to human happiness. My curiosity has always been piqued by the ways in which lyrics impact our beliefs, reinforce our preferences and even help raise dopamine levels. These words also serve a social and cultural purpose, shaping the way we understand and experience music.
And, if our preferences are deeply tied to motivation, then the repeated exposure to meaningful lyrics over time can guide us to appreciate and align with solutions to the challenges we face in the world.
The following songs suggest our ongoing need for equality, compassion and sacrifice:
• “Every Kinda People” by Robert Palmer: This song reminds us that diversity is vital for a functioning society. Inclusivity is something to be valued, emphasizing that we all need each other.
• “Where Is The Love?” by Black Eyed Peas: The lyrics serve as a recurring question, highlighting the necessity of finding common ground and returning to core values. The song offers a powerful commentary on the erosion of respect for others and the threats to individual freedoms. It calls for nurturing relationships that move beyond mere transactions, encouraging transformational connections that enhance our own lives and those of others.
• “The Things We Do For Love” by 10 cc: This song focuses on communication as the key to navigating life’s challenges. It reminds us that every relationship involves a journey and the true lessons of love are demonstrated through our actions, not just our words.
Looking forward, we should aspire for this period in our lives to be our finest hour, rather than our final hour.
