Geneva man sentenced to two years in prison in Medicare fraud case

A Geneva man was sentenced to two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to Medicare fraud.

Prosecutors said Kartik Bhatia, 36, schemed with others to defraud Medicare of more than $2 million by submitting claims for unnecessary medical equipment.

He was charged in 2025.

According to court records, Bhatia paid telemarketing firms to order various orthotics such as ankle, wrist, knee and back braces that were often unneeded by patients. Often, the doctors whose signatures appeared on these orders did not treat these patients or prescribe the equipment.

He was facing a 10-year maximum prison sentence.
