A year after long delays, Cook County tax bills go out on time

After monthslong delays in mailing tax bills last year created havoc for property owners and local governments in Cook County, officials announced Monday that this year’s bills are out on time.

All first-installment 2025 property tax bills have been mailed and also are available online, officials said. Payments are due April 1.

“Mailing property tax bills on schedule reflects the coordination and discipline across all of the property tax offices,” the offices of the county treasurer, clerk and assessor said in a joint statement Monday.

“Timely billing ensures local governments receive the funding they need and gives property owners confidence that the system is reliable and predictable.”

Last year’s delays — which pushed back the payment deadline for the second-installment bills from Aug. 1 to Dec. 15 — was blamed on problems with a countywide technology upgrade headed up by Texas-based Tyler Technologies.

As a result, school districts and other local governments across the county were forced to take out short-term loans or dip into their reserves to pay their bills while awaiting their tax revenues.

Now, county officials said Monday, the first-Installment 2025 collections will be distributed by the county treasurer's office to more than 2,000 local governments within 30 days of receipt.
