Endorsement: Johnson for Kane County sheriff in Democratic primary
Amy Johnson and Salvador Rodriguez, the Democratic candidates for Kane County sheriff, have both dedicated their law enforcement careers to serving and protecting residents in the county.
Johnson is the undersheriff for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. She previously served various roles — including patrol deputy, detective, evidence technician and chief of staff — during her more than 20 years with the office.
Rodriguez retired as a lieutenant in 2024 after nearly 30 years at the office. He currently serves as an officer with the Fox Valley Park District Police Department.
Johnson says her campaign to become sheriff is focused on service, accountability and building trust within the county. Meanwhile, Rodriguez focuses on serving with integrity, fairness and accountability.
If elected, Rodriguez says his priorities would include restoring confidence, improving transparency and increasing the visibility of the sheriff’s office. For example, he promises to host weekly or monthly community events.
Johnson says she would focus on fiscal responsibility and sustainable funding. She wants to find ways to save money while ensuring the office is properly staffed. She also wants to ensure that deputies continue to receive a high level of training.
Democratic voters would be well served by picking either Johnson or Rodriguez as their nominee. We give Johnson the edge because of her administrative experience. As undersheriff, she has a deep knowledge of the sheriff’s office’s resources and has been involved in preparing its annual budget. She also has a working relationship with the members of the Kane County Board.
That will help her if she’s elected in November to replace her boss. Johnson is endorsed.
