Aurora church celebrates Lent by ‘Building Beloved Community'
Wesley United Methodist Church, 14 N. May St. in Aurora, is celebrating the second Sunday of Lent on March 1.
Continuing the sermon series “Building Beloved Community,” the Rev. Tammy Scott will preach on “The Authority That Liberates,” based on Luke 4:16-21.
The series is based on “Building a Beloved Community,” a book written by the United Methodist Church Council of Bishops. A call to action, the book draws on experiences from Ukraine, the Philippines, Guatemala and beyond, revealing common patterns of authoritarianism and offers faithful alternatives grounded in love over fear.
Addressing forces such as Christian nationalism, racism, and extremism, the volume underscores the urgent need for social healing and the church's role in building just, grace-filled communities
According to Pastor Scott, the book discusses when power pretends to be holy and that United Methodists cannot ignore what is going on in this country. “The love of God always is linked to our love for our neighbors. There is no holiness that excludes, no faithfulness that thrives on fear, and no gospel that blesses domination.”
Lent is the 40 days leading up to Easter on April 5.
