PADS of Elgin receives $25,000 grant from the Hoffer Foundation

Grant supports essential shelter operations and community outreach

PADS of Elgin has been awarded a $25,000 grant by the Hoffer Foundation. This generous contribution is restricted to support nights of shelter, meals served, outreach services, and transportation options and services PADS provides for those in need.

During the 2024-25 fiscal year, PADS made a remarkable impact in the community, providing 12,397 nights of shelter and serving 37,190 meals to guests.

The organization sheltered 137 guests, including 21 children, and housed 38 individuals in stable living situations. PADS also extended its reach beyond shelter walls, serving 3,205 outreach meals to those in need.

The majority of PADS guests come from Elgin Township (69%), followed by Dundee Township (14%), with additional clients from Hanover Township, Rutland Township, and surrounding areas.

“The Hoffer Foundation is honored to support PADS of Elgin,” said Gretchen Hoffer-Farb. “We believe that every person deserves dignity, safety, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. Through this partnership, we hope that PADS is able to strengthen their programs, expand critical resources, and continue walking alongside their guests as they pursue housing, employment, and long-term stability.”

“This grant from the Hoffer Foundation allows us to maintain the consistent, compassionate care our neighbors depend on,” said Katie Shaw Thompson, executive director of PADS of Elgin. “From providing a safe place to sleep and a nutritious meal to helping someone get to a job interview or medical appointment, every aspect of this support makes a tangible difference in someone’s journey toward stability.”

PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) provides emergency shelter, supportive services, and advocacy for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Kane County.

Through shelter operations, case management, and community partnerships, PADS works to break the cycle of homelessness and help guests achieve housing stability. PADS’ mission is to respectfully and compassionately empower persons and families who are in need of housing to become self-sustaining by providing shelter, needed services, and professional guidance.
