We must begin seeking common ground

In Friday's Herald Mr. Charles Falk laid all of our immigration problems at Joe Biden' feet. First, I am not a big fan of Joe Biden; he was not a strong leader. However, I believe he was sincere in his efforts. Secondly, we have had immigration problems for decades. They did not mysteriously rise up with the election of Joe Biden.

However, in early 2024, there was a bipartisan (remember that word) Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriation Act, aka Border Act of 2024, that was co-sponsored by senators C. Murphy, Democrat, J. Lankford, Republican, and K. Sinema, Independent. Was it perfect? No, but it was a step forward. However, Trump stuck his nose in and told Republicans not to vote for the bill as he wanted immigration as a talking point for reelection and all the sycophants got in line. If you don't believe me, look it up.

In my opinion, Biden should have been screaming from the rooftops that government, however imperfect, is best when parties with different views seek compromise. This “my way or the highway” stuff is destroying the country.

Remember, “Of the People, By the People, For the People” spoken by President Abraham Lincoln, a Republican? Time to get our heads on straight, turn off the talking heads, do real research to gain knowledge and make conscious decisions based on facts and our own moral compass. I guarantee we will not agree on everything, but I am sure there is common ground and a path forward. I fear our current trajectory will break the country, possibly beyond repair.
