Emily Holum’s legacy lives with Arlington Heights blood drive
An Arlington Heights family is turning heartbreak into hope by hosting a memorial blood drive in honor of their daughter, Emily Holum.
Emily Ann Holum was just 4 years old when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. During her two-year battle, she received numerous blood transfusions that helped sustain her strength and gave her “good days” — days when she could ride her bike, attend kindergarten and simply be a child. Affectionately known as “Mighty Mite” for her resilience, Emily passed away at age 6.
Now, her family is inviting the community to help continue her spirit of giving.
The Emily Holum Memorial Blood Drive, in partnership with Vitalant, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Our Lady of the Wayside gym, 435 S. Ridge, Arlington Heights.
Emily’s family said she received over 500 transfusions of blood products during her treatment. Her family says those donations didn’t just sustain her physically — they provided strength, comfort and more time together.
“In true Emmy spirit, this blood drive is a way that she can continue to help others,” Tom Holum, Emily’s father said.
Appointments are recommended, though walk-ins are welcome. Donors are encouraged to eat well, hydrate and bring a valid photo ID.
Community members can schedule an appointment by calling (877) 258-4825 or visiting vitalant.org and using the code ORD0211C.
By donating, supporters can help ensure other children and families receive the same lifesaving gift of time that meant so much to Emily and her loved ones.
