Man dies at DuPage County jail

A DuPage County jail detainee died Feb. 10, the same day he entered the jail.

His family members want to know why, but they say they have gotten little to no information from jail officials.

The sheriff’s office announced the death Wednesday. According to the sheriff’s news release, the man was taken into custody around 4:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the man “experienced a medical emergency,” the news release said.

He was taken to Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

The news release did not specify what type of medical event occurred. The DuPage County coroner’s office has not responded to a request for information.

On Tuesday, Chris Kamien contacted the Daily Herald about the death of his brother, 46-year-old David Kamien. The state’s attorney’s office and a sheriff’s spokesman also confirmed it was Kamien.

David Kamien was admitted to the jail Feb. 10. A judge convicted him earlier that day of felony theft of more than $100,000 but less than $500,000, and felony identity theft.

Chris Kamien said the family was notified around 2 a.m. Feb. 11 that Kamien had died.

He said Kamien had called his girlfriend around 5 p.m.

According to court records, Kamien was charged in 2019. The charges allege he stole at least $135,000 from his employer between 2014 and 2017. The charges indicate he lived in unincorporated Lombard at the time.

The records indicate he rejected a plea agreement that would have sent him to prison for four years.

The criminal case record does not contain information about David Kamien’s death, but a civil case in which he was a defendant contains a note indicating that the judge was told Wednesday of the death.
