Girls basketball roundup: Donovan hits milestone in Hersey’s regional opener
The IHSA girls basketball state tournament regional openers got underway on Monday and Hersey senior Kate Donovan reached a career milestone on the President's Day holiday.
The senior guard, who will play at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, tossed home 19 points to surpass the 1,000-point mark as the Huskies rolled past Elk Grove 83-23 at the Buffalo Grove regional.
Sadie Marks added 10 points for Hersey followed by Etta Fischer (9) and Ellie Molster (8).
The No. 2 Huskies (20-7) will face No. 7 Buffalo Grove (22-8) for the championship on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Elk Grove (8-22) was paced by Lindsay Bobowski (7 points) and Ashley Braude (7).
Buffalo Grove 92, Larkin 42: Annie Sadowski (25 points, 8 rebounds), Hannah Weber (17 points, 9 rebounds), Kayla Daugird (15 points, 9 assists), Olivia Hill (12 points, 8 rebounds) and Paige Watson (11 points) led the Bison (23-9) in their own regional semifinal.
No. 7 BG (22-8) will host No. 2 Hersey (20-7) for the title on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Carmel 57, Round Lake 14: Freshman Liv Johnson scored 20 points while Maliyah Mays and Ada Lindal chipped in 9 points for No. 2 Carmel (22-9) in the semifinal of the Class 4A McHenry regional.
Amy Keane added 6 for the Corsairs who will face No. 3 Waukegan for the title on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
"It was a great all-around team effort on both ends of the floor," said Carmel coach Ben Berg.
Wauconda 50, North Chicago 3: The No. 2 Bulldogs (25-2) were led by Kelsey Funkhouser (11 points, 7 steals, 4 rebounds, 2 assists), Sophia Giles (10 points, 8 assists, 4 assists, 2 steals), Isabela Campdesuner (9 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal) and Avery Geoghan (6 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals) at the Wauconda regional semifinal.
Wauconda will face No. 7 Streamwood (20-10) in Thursday's 6:30 p.m. title match.
Saint Viator 67, Northtown (CICS) 12: The Lions won their semifinal of the Antioch regional behind top scorers junior Kalin McCrea (16 points), sophomore Ava Garcia (11), freshman Wade (9), sophomore Kathleen Clary (9), senior Emily Walberg (6) and junior Bella Gounaris (5).
No. 3 St. Viator (18-14) will face No. 6 Lake Forest (15-15) for the championship on Thursday.
Lake Forest 45, Antioch 35: Heidi Rathmann (11 points, 3 steals), Addie Webb (10 points) and Scarlett Carroll (8 points, 3 assists) led the No. 9 Sequoits in scoring in the Antioch regional semifinal against the No. 6 Scouts (15-15).
"We struggled collectively on the boards, which contributed to missed offensive opportunities down the stretch that obviously cost us," said Antioch coach Jamie D'Andrea, whose team finished 13-19. "But I'm very proud of the effort our girls put forth in this game and throughout the season."
TUESDAY GAMES
Grayslake Central 66, Fenton 20: No. 5 Grayslake Central (20-9) won over No. 12 Fenton (9-23) at the Class 3A Resurrection regional semifinal.
Ava Henne led GC with 14 points while Addison Thomas added 9 points and 6 steals.
Lauren Anguilm and Alison Armstrong each chipped in 8 points. Lucy Otoo and Peyton Hoffmann had 6 points and 4 rebounds each.
The Rams face the host and No. 4 seeded Bandits on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Maine South 65, Lincoln Park 20: No. 2 Maine South (23-8) defeated No. 10 Lincoln Park (3-25) at the Class 4A New Trier regional semifinal.
The Hawks converted nine 3-pointers in the first quarter. Theresa Sladky and Hayden Fahy each scored 12 points for Maine South while Phoebe O'Shea added 11. Emily Currey and Nellie Ossmo had 8 points apiece
Maine South will face host New Trier on Thursday for the championship.
Lane Tech 55, Maine East 39: No. 11 Maine East (16-15) lost to No. 6 Lane Tech (16-15) at the Class 4A DePaul Academy regional semifinal.
New Trier 47, Leyden 32: No. 10 Leyden lost to No. 7 New Trier at the Class 4A DePaul Academy regional semifinal.
Prospect 64, Hoffman Estates 18: Top-seeded Prospect (20-10) advanced to the championship game of the Class 4A Hoffman Estates regional getting the No. 15 seed and host Hawks (13-17) in the Class 4A regional semifinal.
Junior Zoe Black scored 17 points and converted five 3-pointers to break the program record of 73 for a single season set by Gabrielle Cottrell in 2004. Black now has 77 3-pointers this winter. Alli Linke added 14 points for the Knights, whose coach, Matt Weber, recorded his fifth straight 20-win season in Mt Prospect.
Barrington 61, Highland Park 49: Coach Babbi Barreiro's No. 6-seeded Fillies (12-17) topped No. 11 Highland Park (13-13) in the Fremd regional semifinal.
Barrington will meet No. 3 Fremd for the regional title on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Fremd 62, Palatine 41: No. 3 Fremd (24-6) defeated No. 14 Palatine (7-24) at the Palatine regional semifinal.
Lake Zurich 36, South Elgin 20: No. 4 Lake Zurich (21-10) held the No. 12 Storm (17-15) to a pair of field goals in the first three quarters and led 33-6 in the Class 4A South Elgin regional semifinal.
Leah Gilbertson (9 points), Alex Nowak Tice (8), Addie Leonard (6), Kate Wahlund (6), Layne Nordstrom (5) and Lexie Kahle (2) provided the offense.
The Bears will meet Rolling Meadows for the regional title on Thursday at 6 p.m.,
Rolling Meadows 49, Schaumburg 21: No. 5 Rolling Meadows got past No. 12 Schaumburg at the Class 4A South Elgin regional semifinal and will face No. 4 Lake Zurich on Thursday for the title.
Vernon Hills 44, Sullivan 11: No. 1 Vernon Hills will face No. 10 Lakes in the Cougars' Class 3A regional semifinal on Friday at 7 p.m. Emma Jocson led coach Paul Brettner's Cougars with 10 points.
Lakes 36, Grayslake North 30: No. 10 Lakes improved to 10-21 with the win over No. 8 Grayslake North in the Vernon Hills regional semifinal. The Eagles were led by freshman Natalie Floren's 13 points.
Conant 42, Stevenson 38: No. 8 Conant was led by Lyla Clifton with 10 points (8 in the first half) and Gianna Fresso with 10 points, all in the second second half.
Madyson Biedke added 9 points, including a 3-pointer to break a tie with one minute left.
Kate Clark and Arianna Dugo each chipped in 5 points and Sophia Gomez had 3 for the Cougars, who improved to 13-13.
Reese McClelland had 15 points while Alexa Karcz and Leila Markicic each chipped in 7 for No. 9 Stevenson (10-20).
Conant will face Prospect for the regional title on Thursday.
