10-year-old Aurora author first of 28 spotlights during Black Girl Magic Month
At just 10 years old, Courtney Stovall is already showing the world what brilliance, boldness, and Black Girl Magic look like in real time.
The young author and academic standout was the first of 28 Black girls and young women featured in the social media campaign that will put them in the spotlight from Feb. 15 to March 15, now known as Black Girl Magic Month.
A fourth-grader at Brooks Elementary School in the Aurora-based Indian Prairie Unit District 204, Courtney thrives in accelerated classes through Project ARROW, balancing academic excellence with standout accomplishments well beyond her years.
She became a published author at just 7 years old with her book “Vacation Diary of a Sloth” (available on Amazon), continues sharpening her strategic thinking through Chess Club, gives back to her community through her Girl Scouts Troop, and shows discipline and confidence in taekwondo, where she has earned her red belt.
Courtney’s curiosity stretches across the globe as well as she has already traveled to over 25 states, Puerto Rico, and two countries, embracing each new place with excitement and an adventurous spirit.
Courtney is the first honoree featured as Aurora launches the first-ever Black Girl Magic Month, a powerful movement created to uplift the brilliance and resilience of Black girls and young women.
Aurora is taking the lead among cities across the nation in celebrating Black Girl Magic Month as a purposeful and intentional campaign dedicated to affirming Black girls, amplifying their voices, and celebrating their impact.
Throughout the month, Aurora in Black, a local public relations and advocacy platform, will publish daily features across its social media platforms, spotlighting Black girls and young women — from elementary school through their 20s — who are already making an impact in their schools, communities, and creative spaces.
Honorees will include students, athletes, artists, entrepreneurs, and scholars.
Black Girl Magic Month, a complement to the wildly successful Black Boy Joy Month, held in October, is observed from Feb. 15 through March 15, serving as a meaningful bridge between Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
