Coyne Schofield scores twice in Team USA’s 6-0 quarterfinal win over Italy
Kendall Coyne Schofield led the United States’ scoring parade on Friday.
The four-time Olympian scored 2 goals in a span of 3 minutes, 10 seconds of the second period in the United States’ 6-0 victory over Italy at the Rho Ice Hockey Arena in Milan.
No. 1 seeded Team USA (5-0) outshot No. 8 Italy 51-6 in Friday’s quarterfinal. The United States women have outscored opponents 26-1 and haven’t allowed a goal since midway through their first game at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
The United States scored 5 second-period goals against Italy (2-3), their most in one period of these Games.
With Team USA up 1-0 on Megan Keller’s first-period goal, Coyne Schofield scored her first goal at 18:19 of the second.
Defender Caroline Harvey’s slap shot bounced off the back boards to Coyne Schofield at the goal line near the left of the goal. From the sharp angle she shot the puck toward the goal and off Italy goaltender Gabriella Durante into the net.
Coyne Schofield made the score 3-0 at 15:09 of the second period. After Grace Zumwinkle kept the puck in the offensive zone, Britta Curl carried the puck toward the goal, drawing Durante’s attention. Curl passed to Coyne Schofield skating in on the right, and the 2018 gold medalist shot into a wide-open net.
“Anything to help the team win. I think that’s what we’re all here to do,” the veteran forward told NBC’s Kathryn Tappen of her 2-goal second period.
Laila Edwards made it 4-0 just 26 seconds later during the second-period barrage, while Italy was held without a shot for 25 minutes spanning the first and second periods.
Team USA added goals by Curl and Hannah Bilka to take a 6-0 lead into the third period. Goalkeeper Gwyneth Philips recorded the shutout.
Despite being outshot 20-2 in the first period, Durante kept Italy in the game early. She stopped three prime scoring chances by forward Abbey Murphy of Evergreen Park, using the paddle of her stick to rob Murphy of an open-net goal with 13 seconds left in the first period.
With its next opponent to be determined, the United States women advance to Monday’s Olympic semifinals. Games for both the bronze and gold medals will be held Thursday.
