Libertyville telecom tax extended for 3 years
Libertyville’s telecommunications tax has been extended — with annual reviews — to sunset June 30, 2029.
The amount of the tax was increased from 3.5% to 6% in 2009 to offset declines in sales tax and other revenues during the Great Recession.
The tax increase included a sunset clause to determine whether it should be reduced or eliminated based on economic conditions. It had been scheduled to end June 30 but revenues have been declining for several years due to changes in communication methods and technology, according to the village.
A total of $525,000 in revenue from the tax is included in the proposed 2026-2027 village budget.
