Take it further

The Feb. 1 Daily Herald editorial “ 'Not thinking a thing wrong': Obvious lies about tragic events go beyond spin, disqualify leaders" deserves to be widely read. Its position that our leaders must have a reverence for the humanity of all people or else be disqualified from holding public office is absolutely correct. Thus their call for DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to be removed from office.

However, the editorial does not go far enough. The basic contempt for humanity starts with Donald Trump and Stephen Miller who continue to demonize their opponents and delight in cruelty against immigrants. They are engaged in “ethnic cleansing,” targeting non whites. They want to impose an authoritarian, white, nationalist, Christian nation on this country. We wouldn't be in this position if GOP senators had done their jobs and rejected most of the unqualified and subservient Trump cabinet nominees.

It's up to us to follow the courageous example of the people of Minneapolis to reject the cruel and unacceptable actions and behavior of ICE and Border Patrol who have shown a complete contempt for basic human and constitutional rights.
