Students unveil new Black History Board Game at annual Black History Month pancake breakfast
The Quad County Urban League recently welcomed a packed crowd for its annual Black History Month Pancake Breakfast, a scholarship fundraiser that brought together community members of all ages for food, fellowship, and celebration.
The Feb. 7 event at the Prisco Center in Aurora served as a kick-off to the first Saturday of Black History Month and featured a morning of freshly prepared breakfast, a Black History trivia competition, and a special unveiling led by Quad County Urban League students.
“We are so excited about this kick-off for Black History Month,” said Theodia Gillespie, President and CEO of the Quad County Urban League. “This is one way to bring our community together to learn about history and to pave the way going forward.”
Guests enjoyed plates filled with eggs, bacon, fruit, and freshly made pancakes before taking part in a lively student-versus-adult “Black History Jeopardy” trivia competition, which ended in a win for the students.
The morning concluded with a special announcement from Quad County Urban League middle school and high school students, who unveiled their student-created board game, Legacy Lane.
“Our game, Legacy Lane, was created by us to honor Black History Month,” said Kai Williamson, a Quad County Urban League student. “This game helps players learn about real-life experiences faced by African Americans today. As players move through the board, they explore opportunities, face challenges, and learn about teamwork to lead to success.”
The Quad County Urban League announced that Legacy Lane will be available for purchase on Juneteenth 2026.
The annual pancake breakfast welcomed students, parents, community advocates, elected officials, and included a special visit from the Waubonsee Community College basketball team, who attended in support of the fundraiser before an afternoon game.
