Basketball roundup: Donovan scores 23, helps Hersey tie for MSL West lead

Hersey and Prospect are newcomers to the MSL West. But with one conference game to go, the Huskies and the Knights find themselves alone atop the division.

That happened when Hersey (17-6, 8-1) rolled past Palatine 56-40 on Tuesday. Meanwhile Prospect knocked off Fremd 56-48. That put Hersey (17-6, 8-1) and Prospect (16-10, 8-1) tied for the division lead.

On Tuesday, Kate Donovan led Hersey with 23 points while Sadie Marks and Etta Fischer each had 8 points. Grace Kline led Palatine (6-21, 1-8) with 12 points.

Hersey plays at Prospect on Friday to decide the division winner.

Conant 57, Wheeling 25: Conant (11-12, 7-2) got 13 points from Gianna Fresso and 10 points from Kate Clark. Wheeling (4-23, 0-9) was led by Mia Smith who had 10 points.

Lake Zurich 45, Zion-Benton 13: Lake Zurich (19-9, 12-1) stay on top in the North Suburban Conference.

Libertyville 58, Waukegan 30: Libertyville (10-5, 11-1) remained a half-game back behind Lake Zurich in the North Suburban. Lily Fisher had 29 points and 9 rebounds; freshman Addie Casey had nine points while Charlotte Harrison had 7 points. KateRyan Castro and Caitlyn Griffith held Waukegan (18-9, 9-4) to its lowest point output in nearly a month.

Mundelein 49, Warren 24: Casey Vyverman netted 20 points, Grace Dunigan 11 points and Gabby Macapinlac 8 points as Mundelein (18-11, 8-5) rolled. Kamaria Anderson had 11 points and Asia Short 9 points for Warren (7-20, 2-11).

Vernon Hills 62, Grayslake North 42: Vernon Hills (20-5) pulled away from a four-point third quarter lead for the win. Emma Jocson had a game-high 21 points along with 7 rebounds and 6 assists for the Cougars. Reagan Brettner had a season-high 16 points while Keira Thomas had 9 points and 8 rebounds.

St. Viator 50, Niles West 25: The Lions (16-12) doubled up the Wolves behind Ava Garcia’s 15 points, Emily Walberg’s 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and Catherine Adamski and Evelyn Hill each with 6 points

Buffalo Grove 69, Hoffman Estates 38: The Bison (20-7, 9-0) clinched the MSL East outright with the win. It was also the first time that Buffalo Grove had won 20 games in a season in 10 years. Paige Watson scored a career-high 11 points while Kayla Daugird also had 11 points.

Rolling Meadows 66, Barrington 53: Lizzy Andriano scored 20 points and Nelli Osterhues chipped in 16 as the Mustangs (15-10, 2-7) picked up the road win.

Isla Koertner led Barrington (10-16, 2-7) with 17 points while Maddie Anderle scored 15 for the Fillies, who were without Lily Richmond, who was ill.

Boys basketball

Lake Forest 50, Stevenson 44: The Scouts (9-15, 3-7) stunned the Patriots (17-7, 6-3). Donny Williams and Rocco Pagliocca each had 16 points for Stevenson while Aidan Albrecht added 13 points and Quinton Frakes 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Wauconda 67, Grayslake North 51: Wauconda (20-6, 10-0) led by six halfway through the fourth quarter and then pulled away to remain unbeaten in the Northern Lake County. Tony Salemi led Wauconda with 22 points, Austin Carslen had 19 points, Alex Ortega 13 points and Leo Brinias 11 points. Grayslake North was led by Uros Mitrovic who tallied 19 points and Jared Van Donselaar and Rees Jorden, who each had 12 points.

Grayslake Central 72: North Chicago 52: Grayslake Central (19-8-1) remained a game behind Wauconda in the NLCC. Carson Woods led the Rams with 18 points, Alex Grancille chipped in 17, Cole Halverson 15 and Owen Perz 6 points.

Grant 59, Antioch 32: Grant (11-10, 7-3) got balanced performances from DJ Stitts who had 16 points, Damarrion Smith and Jayden Smith who each had 12 points and 4 rebounds while Noah McMath led the Bulldogs with 7 rebounds. Antioch fell to 5-10, 1-9.

Lakes 76, Round Lake 43: Ben Newcomb scored 15 points, Dorian Pullen 11, and Carter Martin and Aidan Hopkins each had 10 for Lakes (13-9, 7-3). Devin Powell had 13 points and Jaquan Jamerson 11 for Round Lake (9-13, 1-9).

Maine West 68, Elk Grove 62: Maine West ( 10-13) came up with a nice home win by holding off the Grenadiers. Elk Grove was led by Cooper Casterton, who scored 16 points while Matt Novak had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Khaleel Khan added 10 points.

Prospect 57, Maine East 48: Prospect (11-14) came up with the win in Park Ridge. Danny Simon led the Knights with 18 points, Anderson Neach added 15 points and Quinn Zinzer had 10 points.

Maine South 67, Glenbrook South 48: Maine South (12-13. 2-6) picked up a huge conference win over the Titans. Panayiotis Sotos led the Hawks with 20 points while sophomore Sean Ryan chipped in 17.

Wheeling 62, North Shore Country Day 58: Wheeling (6-19) got big performances from Zach Neukirch and Jesus 'Chuy' Zavala, who each scored 21 points, while Peter Kulig added 14 points.

St. Ignatius 54, Schaumburg 39: The Saxons (15-10), who were down two starters, stayed close but fell in their trip to Chicago. Cam Anderson led Schaumburg with 17 points while Masyn Harrell had 11 points and Tony Horton Jr. added 10 points.

Carmel 54, Highland Park 44: Jackson Stavros had 12 points and Ethan Matz 11 to power the Corsairs (9-17).
