Authorities: North Central College student had gun in dormitory

A North Central College student has been charged with illegally possessing a gun in a dormitory at the Naperville school.

And his roommate is accused of dealing cannabis.

Kurtis I. Cruz, 18, of the 100 block of East 56th Avenue in Merrillville, Indiana, is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, according to DuPage County court records. The charge specifically relates to possessing a weapon in a public place or school, according to the court records.

The charge states he had a Gen5 Glock29 10mm pistol, with a 26-round extended magazine.

Diyonnes K. King, 18, of the 500 block of Ashland Avenue, Elgin, is charged with manufacture/delivery of between 30 and 500 grams of cannabis, and delivery of between 30 and 500 grams of cannabis on school grounds.

All the charges are felonies.

On Sunday, Judge Christine Cody granted a prosecutor’s request that Cruz be detained in jail pretrial.

According to the prosecutor’s petition for detention, college security officers were on patrol around 1:11 a.m. Saturday and investigated loud music and the smell of cannabis in a dormitory room. They called Naperville police after discovering the handgun in a backpack underneath Cruz’s bed, according to the petition.

The petition stated that police found 39 plastic bags of cannabis, with a total weight of 136.5 grams, in another backpack on King’s side of the room.
