‘Edgy’ Tim: Hersey’s Nawrot seeing recruiting stock soar

Hersey junior quarterback Jake Nawrot (6-foot-4, 190 pounds) continued to see his recruiting stock soar during the just completed NCAA open recruiting period.

Nawrot added scholarship offers in January from Wisconsin, Washington, Iowa, Rutgers, Boston College, Duke, Oklahoma State and Kansas State. Nawrot also worked out in front of multiple Power 4 programs including Alabama, Georgia, Michigan State, Iowa State and Syracuse. Nawrot mentioned previously that he would like to make a college decision sometime this spring.

McMiller adds first Division I offers

Glenbard West junior cornerback Jaylen McMiller (5-10, 170 pounds) added his first two Division I scholarship offers last week.

“I added my first offer from Western Michigan last Monday,” McMiller said. “On (Tuesday) Western Illinois also offered me a scholarship and it feels great to add those offers.

“Coach (Dan) Sabock from Western Michigan made an in-school visit earlier this week and that’s when they offered me a scholarship,” he said. “I was definitely surprised with the offer to be honest. I know that Western Michigan is a great school and they also have a strong program in the (Mid-American Conference). One of my old teammates Joey Pope plays for Western Michigan and our game is similar. Western Michigan is offering me for now as more of an athlete. They want to see how much more I grow and develop before getting specific on a position.

“Most schools like me as a corner and they all like me returning kicks and my explosiveness,” he said. “I've never been to Western Michigan but I'm hoping to get out to see the school sometime this spring.”

Barrington’s Coles explains transfer

Barrington junior wide receiver Austin Coles (6-4, 190 pounds) has always had a strong connection to the state of Florida including playing 7-on-7 in the offseason with the South Florida Express. Coles last week decided to make Florida his permanent home and has enrolled and is attending classes at Florida power St. Thomas Aquinas.

“Everything is all squared away and I've transferred from Barrington to St. Thomas Aquinas,” Coles said. “I’ll definitely miss my teammates and coaches at Barrington along with my friends, but I'm also excited for the new challenge at a new school.”

Coles pointed toward some key factors in his decision to leave Barrington for Florida.

“I just enjoy the challenges of playing in Florida with and against some great players,” he said. “I'm doing everything I can to play against the best possible competition. I've been playing with the South Florida Express for a few years now and I feel that experience has made me a better player.

“I want to be as strong of a player as possible to get me ready for college football,” he said. “I'll get to play spring football in Florida, which I believe starts in late February, and I can't wait to get going. I'm also not going to miss the cold weather right now in Barrington, that’s for sure.”

York’s Roberts getting looks

York junior defensive end Owen Roberts (6-4, 230 pounds) is the next in line from a program that never seems short on having impressive looking, long and athletic prospects.

Roberts recapped his latest recruiting news, including several college coaches who stopped into school during January’s open recruiting period.

“I have scholarship offers from NIU, Western Michigan, San Diego State along with Lindenwood (FCS) and roster spot offers from Yale, Cornell and Brown,” he said. “ … Besides the Ivy League schools we’ve also seen the coaches from Kansas State, Northwestern, Michigan State, Wyoming, Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue.”

Owen Roberts made visits last weekend to Michigan State and Purdue.
