Profiles in Excellence returns for Black History Month

Origin stories come to life through performance and storytelling at the 43rd annual Profiles in Excellence event from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1 at Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 N. Green Bay Road, North Chicago.

The event hosted by the Lake County Forest Preserves is free and open to all. It commemorates Black History Month by recognizing notable African Americans in the area.

The program features a performance and lecture by playwright Ted Williams III, along with insights from the creator and cast members of the musical “1619: The Journey of a People.”

Waukegan residents Frank Pettis, an environmental educator and organizer and volunteer Leila Glover will be honored for their lasting contributions.
