Police officer gets 12 years on child pornography conviction

A former Elgin police officer has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Jordan Collins, 36, of Kirkland, was sentenced Tuesday, according to a news release from the Illinois attorney general’s office.

Collins pleaded guilty in October in DeKalb County Circuit Court to four counts.

Collins’ residence was searched Dec. 4, 2023. He was arrested while working that night.

“Defendants who victimize and prey on children, especially defendants in positions of authority and trust, deserve to be in prison. A sentence of 12 years sends a strong message and will hopefully deter others who might seek to do harm to our most vulnerable,” DeKalb County State’s Attorney Riley N. Oncken said in the news release.

The attorney general and the DeKalb state’s attorney co-prosecuted the case. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office helped investigate the case.

Collins worked for Elgin from Sept. 11, 2018, to Dec. 27, 2023, according to the state’s police officer certification registry.
