Maine South Theatre presents ‘She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition’

The Maine South Fine Arts Department is proud to present “She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition,” by acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6 and 7; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8. This show contains an audience advisory as it is recommended for ages 13 and older. Tickets are $10 for students and $12 for adults; cash or check only at the door.

This production brings heart, humor and heroism to the stage. Audiences will follow an epic journey through grief, love and imagination, armed with dice and swords, connected through the imaginative world of tabletop role-playing games.

The show follows Agnes Evans, a young woman grappling with the sudden loss of her teenage sister, Tilly. As she discovers a “Dungeons & Dragons”-style adventure written by her late sister, Agnes journeys through the fantasy world and begins to understand her sister more deeply, finding unexpected courage, healing and community along the way. With some exciting stage combat, imaginative characters and emotional depth, “She Kills Monsters” offers audiences a unique theatrical experience.

In this production, all of the monsters are brought to life through puppetry, transforming the stage into a living embodiment of the imagination of teens. The design and choreography embraces the way teenagers dream, exaggerate and create. “She Kills Monsters” celebrates fantasy as a space where young people can be brave, vulnerable and powerful.

“I’m really proud of how fearless these students have been,” Director Samantha Kaufman said. “They jumped into puppetry, big physical storytelling and some emotional material without hesitation. They trusted their imaginations and each other, and that’s what makes this production so exciting to watch.”

Blending laugh-out-loud humor with poignant emotional beats, “She Kills Monsters” is a love letter to outcasts, gamers and anyone who has ever felt unseen. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or new to the realm of tabletop fantasy, “She Kills Monsters” invites audiences to roll the dice and join the quest.

“She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition” is recommended for audiences ages 13 and up due to “PG-13” language, themes and content that may not be appropriate for younger children. Parents and guardians are encouraged to use discretion when bringing children under 13.
