Basketball roundup: Wauconda boys wins 7th straight behind balanced attack; Stevenson girls rally in second half

Wauconda has had a busy but successful four days.

The Bulldogs played three games over that span, winning all three and increasing their winning streak to seven games as they knocked off Buffalo Grove 78-68.

Wauconda (15-5) built a 63-49 lead after three quarters behind Tony Salemi, who had 19 points and 8 assists. Alex Ortega, Leo Brinias and Austin Carlsen each had 16 points while Carlsen also had 6 assists. Cole Plucinski added 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Buffalo Grove (9-12), which dropped its fourth in a row, was led by Alex Sirbu, who had 23 points. Edwin Karnauchovas and Nathan Freheit each had 9 points while Jackson Oldenburg had 8 points.

Wheeling 55, Elgin 38: Zach Neukirch and Jesus 'Chuy' Zavala each had 16 points as Wheeling went to Elgin for the victory. Peter Kulig added 13 points for the Wildcats.

Grant 82, Round Lake 65: Grant (7-9, 3-3) picked up the win behind Noah McMath’s 24 points, Jayden Smoth’s 16 points and 7 rebounds and Charles Schlicht’s 16 points. Round Lake (7-10, 0-6) was led by Jamerson Jaquan, who had 29 points and 7 rebounds while Jonny Ortega added 10 points and Ryder Haynes 9 points.

Carmel 57, North Chicago 41: Ethan Mtaz, who topped the 1,000-point mark last week, scored 18 points to lead the Corsairs (8-13). Jackson Stavros added 11 points.

Vernon Hills 61, Antioch 44: Vernon Hills (14-7) got a solid performance from Jeremy Zamost, who posted 17 points. Daniel Odhiambo and Brady Larsen each had 11 points, Graham Lis 9 points and Nolan Brettner 8 points as the Cougars rolled on the road. Antioch (4-15) was led by Miles Marabella, who had 13 points.

Wilmot Union (Wis.) 70, Grayslake North 61: Grayslake North (9-10) took a drive to Wisconsin and fell short. Uros Mitrovic had 18 points for the Knights while Jared Van Donselaar had 16 points while Dylan Warder added 13 points.

Grayslake Central 52, Mundelein 37: Grayslake Central (14-6) got 26 points from Cole Halverson to pick up the win while Carson Woods added 11 points. Mundelein fell to 5-17.

Girls

Maine West 54, Deerfield 51: In the battle of Warriors, Maine West (12-10) outlasted Deerfield (7-13) in a CSL crossover game. Kaitlyn Nutley had 13 points, Ava Roback 12 points, Yousuf Abramson and Alyssa Phillip each had 8 points, while Mariana Espinoza added 6 points for Maine West.

St. Viator 59, Payton Prep 31: Viator (13-9) bolted to a 20-7 lead after one quarter and rolled to the win in Chicago. Ava Garcia led the Lions with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Kalin McCrea had 12 points, 4 assists and two steals while Bella Gounaris added 11 points.

Stevenson 54, Glenbrook North 47: The Patriots (9-13) rallied from a 29-24 halftime deficit to pick up the win. Reese McLelland led Stevenson with 16 points while Leila Markcic had 15 points.

Libertyville 57, Yorkville 41: Libertyville (17-4) grabbed a 28-19 lead at the half and put away the game from there.

Mundelein 59, Zion-Benton 16: Mundelein (15-9, 6-4) rolled in a North Suburban contest.

Hoffman Estates 44, Elgin 19: The Hawks (12-10) picked up another win.
