Boys basketball: Pomis heats up, helps Hersey knock off Prospect

Hersey senior guard Charlie Pomis took a hard dribble to his right, turned in the corner directly in front of visiting Prospect’s bench, faded, and drilled the jumper. Nothing but net.

Next time up the floor, Pomis lined up a three-pointer from the wing. Bullseye.

In danger of catching fire, Pomis stopped on a dime in transition and launched another deep ball.

Splash.

“Certain times I’m getting it going, and I honestly feel like I can hit any shot,” Pomis said. “When I’m not going, I like getting my teammates quality stuff and getting it done on the defensive end.”

Pomis added a touch of it all Friday night in Arlington Heights, dishing out 4 assists and swiping 2 steals to supplement his game-high 17 points, all of which led to a 55-37 Mid-Suburban League victory for Hersey (15-3, 5-0).

“I really liked our attitude tonight,” said Huskies coach Bob Widlowski. “I thought we played to win. We were solid defensively and we executed offensively. Prospect brought it, we knew they were going to. We feel very fortunate with the outcome tonight.”

Indeed, the Knights (8-10, 2-5) came out of the gates swinging, going toe-to-toe with the home team to end the first quarter down just a point.

Senior guard Colin Tucker, who finished with a team-high 15 points for Prospect, poured in 5 of those in the opening frame.

Down low, junior forward Danny Simon proved a force to be reckoned with, snaring 4 first-quarter rebounds.

Unfortunately for the visitors, when one bucket fell for Pomis, an avalanche followed.

From the midway point of the second quarter to the end of the third, the Huskies outscored Prospect 24-7, including a 12-0 run as the third quarter expired.

Hersey junior Jake Nawrot tallied 7 points and 4 rebounds, while fellow junior Tristan Trotter provided a spark off the bench, totaling 7 points and 3 boards.

Alongside Pomis in the backcourt, senior guard Logan Luxem delivered 5 dimes.

On his last assist of the night, Luxem found Pomis for his third three-pointer of the contest. Following yet another swish, the friends shared the iconic ‘three-finger’ celebration.

“I love playing with Logan,” Pomis said. “I’ve been playing with [Luxem] ever since like seventh grade I think. I mean, our chemistry is through the roof. I love playing with him, love playing with the guys. I love this team this year. I think we can do big things.”
