Harris to deliver key remarks at Chicago’s MLK interfaith breakfast

Former Vice President Kamala Harris will return to Chicago to deliver the keynote speech at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. interfaith breakfast on Monday, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced.

“I want to thank Vice President Harris for coming to Chicago to honor the legacy of Dr. King in our city,” Johnson said Thursday in a statement.

“The vice president could be anywhere, and the fact that she chose to come to our city and lift up the work we are doing to defend our democracy means a lot to the people of Chicago.”

Harris was a high-profile visitor to Chicago during the August 2024 Democratic National Convention.

“Vice President Harris is a trailblazer and a staunch defender of the freedoms and rights of everyday Americans. We are honored to host her and look forward to a historic MLK interfaith breakfast this year,“ Johnson said.

The city’s interfaith breakfast tradition was started over 40 years ago by Mayor Harold Washington, Chicago’s first Black mayor. The event brings together faith communities from across the city to celebrate King’s legacy.

This interfaith breakfast’s theme this year is “Defending Our Democracy, Protecting Our Rights.”
