Man charged with arson in fire that destroyed Carpentersville apartment building

A man has been charged with arson for a November fire that displaced 24 families at a Carpentersville apartment building.

Carpentersville police announced Wednesday that Garland H. McGhee, 30, of the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Street in Gary, Indiana, has been charged with aggravated arson, residential arson, arson to real and personal property and criminal damage with fire or explosives.

The fire started around 12:30 a.m. Nov. 29 on the 100 block of Meadowdale Court. According to village officials, there were no major injuries from the fire. One person was treated for smoke inhalation.

The building sustained roughly $2 million in damage and has been declared a total loss.

The news release did not say when McGhee will appear in Kane County court. As of Wednesday evening, the case was not listed on the court clerk’s website.
