Basketball roundup: Hersey girls take sole possession of MSL West lead; Libertyville boys drop first NSC game
Hersey’s girls basketball team scored 20 points in the third quarter to pull away from Palatine with a 60-33 win Tuesday night in Arlington Heights.
The win and Fremd’s win over Prospect moved Hersey (11-4, 4-0) into sole possession of first place in the MSL West.
Sadie Marks led Hersey with 18 points while Etta Fischer had 10 points, Jillian Wandler 9 points and Kate Donovan 8 points. Palatine (5-12, 1-3) was led by Grace Kline’s 13 points.
Barrington 33, Rolling Meadows 31: The Fillies (7-9, 1-3) got their first conference win as Lily Richmond had 9 points and 9 rebounds.
Buffalo Grove 54, Hoffman Estates 26: Buffalo Grove (11-6, 4-0) remained atop the MSL East with a solid win. The Bison got 11 points from Hannah Weber, 10 from Annie Sadowski, and 8 from Olivia Hill.
Schaumburg 36, Elk Grove 23: Schaumburg (8-8, 3-1) prevailed in the MSL East. JJ Wirtz had 13 points for Elk Grove 3-14, 0-3) while Katie Wirtz and Brianna Magner each had 5 points.
Conant 50, Wheeling 27: Lyla Clifton knocked down 15 points for Conant (6-9, 3-1) and Madyson Biedke added 9 points. Wheeling (1-16, 0-4) was led by Madison O’Rourke, who had 8 points.
Wauconda 49, Round Lake 19: Wauconda (14-0. 5-0) remained unbeaten behind Sophia Giles’ 11 points and Kelsey Funkhouser and Avery Geoghan, who each had 9 points. Round Lake (5-9, 0-5) was led by Emma Franks with 7 points.
Grayslake Central 49, Grant 39: Grayslake Central (8-7, 5-0) remained tied for the lead in the Northern Lake as Peyton Hoffmann poured in 25 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Addison Thomas also had a huge night with 17 points and 3 assists.
Antioch 53, Lakes 39: Antioch (7-11, 4-2) took care of its district rival as Heidi Rathman had a huge night with 28 points. Lakes (5-11, 2-3) was paced by Gianna Gray’s 15 points and Ryan Horvath’s 12 points.
Grayslake North 71, North Chicago 24: Grayslake North (7-11, 3-2) rolled behind Gisele Medin and Lucy Roscoe who each had 14 points and Hillary Cabanillas’ 11 points.
Maine South 63, Evanston 57 (OT): In a battle for the top spot in the CSL South, Maine South (14-3, 4-0) rallied from 7 down to start the fourth quarter and then was able to outlast Evanston (6-6, 4-1) in overtime.
Vernon Hills, 41, Niles North 36: Vernon Hills was able to hold off Niles North behind Keira Thomas’ 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Eve Engler added 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 6 steals while Reagan Brettner added 5 points and 7 rebounds.
Maine East 43, Niles West 32: Maine East (8-9, 2-3) picked up a CSL North win as Arabella Silva scored 17 points on 11-of-12 free throw shooting. Heidi Cortez had 10 points and Cumiyah Priester had 8 points.
Highland Park 57, Maine West 48: The Warriors (8-6, 3-2) came up a bit short at Highland Park (7-5, 4-1). Alyssa Philip led Maine West with 18 points while Kaitlyn Mutley had 14 points.
BOYS
Waukegan 68, Libertyville 55: Libertyville (8-5, 3-1) dropped its first conference game. The Wildcats trailed Waukegan 31-29 in the second quarter before the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered points to pull away. Bryce Wegrzyn led Libertyville with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Baker had 14 points and Jack Cenar 8 points.
Warren 66, Mundelein 30: Warren (12-1, 3-0) opened with a 25-5 run and cruised past Mundelein (5-12, 1-3). Jaxson Davis led Warren with 20 points while Joel Paasch chipped in 12 points and LeBron Massey 10 points. Mundelein fell to 5-12, 1-3.
Lake Zurich 47, Zion-Benton 29: The Bears (6-9, 1-3) picked up their first conference win behind Kain Kretschmar’s 20 points and Adrian Riep’s 11 points.
Stevenson 55, Lake Forest 47: Stevenson (11-5, 3-1) got a huge game from Donovan Williams who scored 28 points with a pair a dunks along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Rocco Pagliocca had 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists while Aidan Albrecht added 9 points and 9 rebounds.
Niles North 64, Vernon Hills 47: Niles North (12-4, 4-0) took over the lead in the CSL North with its victory. Jeremy Zamost led Vernon Hills with 12 points while Brady Larsen had 10 points.
Buffalo Grove 58, Addison Trail 48: Alex Sirbu had a big night with 25 points and 17 rebounds for the Bison (8-8). Ethan Fajardo chipped in 16 points.
Leyden 49, Wheeling 37: Robert Darling had 14 points and Ernesto Sanchez added 10 points to lead Leyden. Wheeling (3-13) was led by Zach Neukirch’s 16 points and Peter Kulig and Jesus 'Chuy' Zavala, who each had 8 points.
Hoffman Estates 76, Marian Central 53: Hoffman (13-3) bounced back from a tough loss Saturday night to Downers Grove North to roll Tuesday. Torey Baskin led the Hawks with 25 points, 7 steals and 5 rebounds. Chris Mobley had 12 points and 5 rebounds, Cam James 11 points, Ramon Rosario 10 points and Bryce Smith 5 points and 10 rebounds.
Highland Park 72, Maine West 43: The Warriors (5-9, 1-3) fell in CSL North play.
