Junkyard fire near Elgin guts large storage building

A junkyard fire Sunday afternoon near Elgin gutted a large storage building, but resulted in no injuries.

Bartlett Fire Protection District firefighters were alerted to the blaze at about 4:15 p.m. at the facility on the 31W400 block of Spaulding Road, which was initially reported to be an outdoor fire by a neighbor.

When firefighters arrived, it was discovered a large storage building was on fire. Fire officials said the attack was hampered by a lack of access to the building and other challenging conditions.

It took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control.

A total of 46 firefighters using six engines and five ladder trucks worked to extinguish the blaze. Drones were deployed to locate hot spots as well.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
