Wrestling: Schaumburg continues to impress with Dundee-Crown invite championship
Fresh off its second-place finish at the dual-team state tournament in DeKalb last weekend, Schaumburg, led by sensational senior Nadi Razzak, rolled over and through its competition Saturday afternoon in Carpentersville.
Razzak (25-1), the No. 5-rated 190-pounder in the state, pinned her way to the title at the Dundee-Crown Girls Invite. Her final match was a pin at 1:55 over No. 2 Samantha Diehl (24-3) from Hampshire.
The Saxons won with 240 points. Woodstock was second at 189.5, Antioch a distant third with 137 points. Glenbard East (132.5) was fourth and Freeport (118.5) fifth.
“We lost three very good seniors from a year ago, but we have a very talented group of young wrestlers on our roster so we are coming together really well as a team as the season goes on,” Razzak said.
The Saxons star, fifth a year ago at state with a 47-5 record, was joined atop the podium by teammates Isabella Rivas (125 pounds, 24-2), Sharon Olorunfemi (135, 23-3) and Olivia Furlan (18-6) at 235 pounds.
“Being a part of the dual-team state tournament is a wonderful accomplishment for all of us, and despite being the runner-up for the second straight season, I feel like we will all benefit from the experience,” Razzak added.
Stevenson claimed a pair of individual champions in Athena Zappas (115, 17-1) and Karina Lojowski (19-1).
No. 5 Annabelle Mueller (105, 29-4) won her second major of the season, while another freshman, Batavia’s Audrey Sheldon (25-4), did the same at 155 pounds.
Jacobs’ Julia Felton (12-3) won at 110, and Glenbard East’s Maria Green (20-0) at 140 pounds.
Boys wrestling
At Libertyville:
Libertyville hosted its first invitational featuring five state-ranked teams and another 36 state-ranked wrestlers.
The team race proved to be an exciting one with Mahomet-Seymour, Deerfield and Wheeling battling for top honors.
No. 10 Deerfield sat atop the leaderboard on a couple of occasions over No. 5 Mahomet-Seymour, with No. 13 Wheeling always just 8-12 points away from its two rivals.
Mahomet-Seymour used its upper-weight strength to stay far enough away when the invite ended, amassing 194 points, 14 more than second-place Deerfield, with Wheeling (170.5) third.
Naperville North (158), with a superb performance from No. 4 Tavfik Ibragimov (24-0), stayed unbeaten at 215 leading the way for the Huskies, who outdistanced Maine South (124), which finished fifth.
“I don't worry too much where I'm at in the state polls, it's all about continuing to work hard, keep my focus, and just going out (and) giving my best,” Ibragimov said.
Host Libertyville was treated to Ethan Trowbridge’s marvelous effort on his way to his first major title of the season at 175 pounds.
“It's great to win in my home gym. I've been working harder than ever after putting in so much extra time over the offseason, and the hope is that all of that work will pay off in the postseason,” Trowbridge said.
“The work ethic from Ethan is the best, and his desire to be better has been key to his turnaround from a year ago when he was 24-20 overall,” said Wildcats coach Dale Eggert.
Schaumburg junior Aidan Quevado (10-4) dominated all day at 138 pounds.
“I've missed some time due to an illness, but right now I am feeling really good about the way I am wrestling,” said Quevado, who recorded a pair of tech falls, a pin and a major decision in his final.
Lake Park’s Nicholas Merola won following his effort that included a trio of tech falls to send him into his final against Mahomet-Seymour’s Justus Vrona (21-7), where he needed just 2:43 to claim his tournament crown.
“I know I won today, but I've got to be better than I was during my four matches,” Merola said.
Maine South senior Caden Ljubenko (17-3, 157 pounds) is enjoying his place outside of the limelight of the top six in the state men at his weight class that features five returning state medal winners, who combined have earned 13 trips downstate.
“I kind of like being in the shadows of everyone else in the state. It's a good place to be for me. Overlooked gives me an advantage, in my opinion,” Ljubenko said.
At Grant:
Marmion Academy proved during the first half of the 2025-2026 season that it is worthy of being the No. 1 team in Class 3A, but there might be a change after Saturday’s action.
The Cadets faced No. 2 Joliet Catholic in the championship match at the Loffredo Duals at Grant, and the Hilltoppers took home the big prize following their impressive 39-17 victory.
Both clubs went past their first two opponents, but a key major decision from freshman Finn McDermott over No. 2 Colton Wyller at 120 pounds sent the Hilltoppers on their way.
Wyller bumped up from 106 to help fill in the Cadets’ lineup for the day.
No. 1 Nicholas Garcia helped get the Cadets back on track with his major decision over No. 3 Jason Hampton, while teammate Demetrios Carrera recorded a major decision at 150 to pull the Cadets close at 14-11.
But it was all Hilltoppers from there on out.
Host Grant finished third after its 38-28 victory over No. 13 Oak Park-River Forest thanks to three consecutive pins from by Aiden Arroyo, Xavier Arroyo and Casey Gipson.
“We have a very difficult tournament schedule this year, and although we might take a few losses here and there, I know the strength of our schedule will pay all of us dividends when the postseason begins,” said Bulldogs senior Vince Jasinski.
