Carpentersville police chief retires

Carpentersville Police Chief Todd Shaver has retired.

Shaver had been chief since March 2023. He served as deputy chief for eight years before that.

“I worked with him for many years. He’s a great guy,” Village President John Skillman said Friday.

Skillman said he and Shaver came up through the ranks at the same time — Skillman as a firefighter who ultimately became fire chief; Shaver as a patrol officer, sergeant, commander, deputy chief and chief.

Shaver had worked for the village for more than 26 years. He became deputy chief in 2015. While serving as a sergeant, he was president of the sergeants’ union.

Shaver started his police career with Sleepy Hollow and then worked for East Dundee.

Deputy Chief Kevin Stankowitz will serve as interim chief while the village searches for a new one, Skillman said.

Dec. 19 was Shaver’s last day on the job.

He became chief after a new village manager dismissed Patrick Hoey, who had been chief for less than two years. Hoey replaced Michael Kilbourne, who retired.
