Check scam reported in Des Plaines

Someone fraudulently tried to cash a check connected to a Des Plaines woman’s bank account last week, police said Friday.

The check had been altered to appear that it was for $6,000, according to a news release from Des Plaines police.

The resident had written a check for $60 to pay a bill and mailed it to the vendor, police said. It was intercepted in transit between Dec. 3 and Dec. 9. The amount and the intended recipient’s name were changed.

The would-be thief tried to cash the check at a Des Plaines bank but was unsuccessful, police said. The bank notified the woman of the activity.
