Boys basketball: Gray scores 22 points, helps Barrington edge Larkin to reach Hinkle semifinals

Barrington saved its best for last.

Scoring the final 7 points, the fourth-seeded Broncos nipped Larkin 68-59 in a second round game at the Hinkle Holiday Classic held at Jacobs High School Monday night.

A 3-pointer by Jayden Bailey pulled Larkin within 61-59 with 2:12 left in the game.

Those would be the last points the Royals would score.

Oliver Gray, who scored a game-high 22 points with 12 rebounds and a pair of 3-pointers, scored 5 points and Jackson Roberts had a layup in the final 7-0 run.

"It was a tough game," said Gray. “Larkin was really competitive. We were tough at the end and made some shots."

Roberts scored 16 points and hit two 3-pointers.

"I hit some 3s early and that got me going,“ Roberts said. ”We needed this win."

Barrington improved to 6-4.

“Larkin is a talented team that competes," said Barrington coach Bryan Tucker. ”We made enough shots at the end. Oliver is a great player who came up with some big shots at the end. Jackson also played well."

Robbie Shomaker added 10 points for the Broncos.

Barrington was 8-of-18 from 3-point range for 44%.

Larkin (5-8) was 9-for-15 from beyond the arc for 60%.

Jayden Bailey led the Royals with 15 points on five 3-pointers.

Larkin’s Kamryn Bartee scored 12 off the bench and Jahvion Sowers tallied 11.

"We played hard and made some things happen," said Larkin coach Anton Wilkins. “We are learning to play our brand of basketball. Gray is a great player and he made some tough shots at the end. He can hit the midrange to the 3 and get to the basket. He is a phenomenal player. My hats off to him."
