Aurora’s Wesley UMC kicks off sandwich drive for community fridges
On Sunday, Dec. 14, Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora kicked off a two-Sunday sandwich-making drive for Aurora’s community fridges.
The Rev. Tammy Scott, Wesley lead pastor, said a half dozen youth and adults made and bagged 46 sandwiches after 10:30 a.m. worship.
Sandwiches featured donated ham, turkey, bologna, roast beef with Swiss, Colby jack and American cheeses. Another sandwich-making party is set for 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21.
A project of Indivisible Aurora, an advocacy group, the current community fridges are outside Fresh Start City Church, 10 S Lancaster St.; Jo-Ana's Salon, 374 High St.; and Judah Robinson Foundation, 223 Spring St.
The fridges are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The fridges are stocked by volunteers, local businesses and community members who want to make sure no one goes hungry.
Anyone may take food — no ID, no cost, no questions. Donations help maintain the fridges, purchase discounted groceries and keep fresh, healthy food available for all.
Rev. Scott said, “Together, we’re building a community where neighbors support neighbors and nutritious food is accessible to everyone. The fridges are part of a national grass-roots, volunteer-led program working to reduce food insecurity in neighborhoods.”
Donations are always welcome Rev. Scott said.
