Elgin manufacturing facility to close, eliminating 111 jobs
Printpack Inc. will close its Elgin manufacturing facility, resulting in the layoff of 111 employees.
A statement from the Atlanta-based company, which manufactures flexible and rigid packaging for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries, said the company will wind down operations over the next six months.
“It is never easy to make decisions that affect the lives and livelihoods of our associates,” Jack Austin, Printpack’s chief operating officer, said in the statement. “Our Elgin associates have demonstrated exceptional dedication and professionalism throughout the years.”
Printpack has been in Elgin since 1978, when it acquired the plant at 1400 Abbott Drive from Standard Packaging Corporation.
The company said Austin visited the facility in early November to deliver the news. The closure was detailed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the state of Illinois in November. The report says layoffs will begin Jan. 5, 2026.
As part of the transition process, Printpack officials say they will offer transfer opportunities to associates interested in employment at other company locations. The company will also provide severance packages and career transition support.
“Unfortunately, shifts in core market demands impacted our ability to serve customers from Elgin, making the decision necessary,” Austin said in the release. “We are indebted to our associates for their resilience and will ensure an orderly and compassionate transition.”
The 69-year-old company’s website says it operates 17 facilities in North America and employs 3,200 workers.
