City contractor fatally struck by train at Naperville station

A contractor with the city of Naperville was killed Monday when a freight train collided with snow removal equipment, authorities said.

Naperville police and firefighters responded Monday evening to reports of an incident involving a train and an individual at the city’s downtown train station at 105 E. 4th Ave.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the victim, an adult male contractor for the city, was operating snow removal equipment on the station's south platform when the equipment he was driving was struck by an eastbound freight train.

“This is a profound tragedy,” Naperville City Manager Doug Krieger said in a statement. “Our employees and contractors deliver vital services to the community daily, and their safety is of paramount importance to us. The loss of life in this manner is heartbreaking.”

Krieger stated that the city will cooperate with the Metra Police Department’s ongoing investigation of the incident.
