Aurora police investigating officer-involved firearm discharge
Aurora police say no one was injured when an officer fired their weapon during a traffic stop Tuesday morning.
Police responded just after 9:30 a.m. to the report of a driving-related altercation near Jackson Street and East Benton Street. The 911 caller said another driver was following him and had shown a firearm while claiming to be a law enforcement officer to get the caller to stop.
Officers located the vehicles at the intersection of 4th Avenue and South State Street. The person who had claimed to be a member of law enforcement was outside his vehicle, authorities said.
During the encounter that followed, a responding officer discharged their firearm once, striking the individual’s vehicle, authorities said. No one was hit, and no injuries were reported.
A 48-year-old man from Aurora was taken into custody pending further investigation. Officials say the man has no affiliation with any law enforcement agency.
In accordance with protocol, the involved officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
An independent investigation into the officer’s actions is being conducted by the department’s Deadly Force Investigative Team.
